Breaking Free from the Spirit of Fear: Lessons from the Pig Pen

Recently, I noticed an unexpected lesson while watching our pigs. We’d been keeping them inside an electric fence for their safety. But here’s the thing— the fence hadn’t been turned on for weeks. The pigs didn’t know that, though. They believed they were trapped, and fear held them in place. All it would have taken was a little push, and they’d have broken free. Yet, because they believed the lie of their captivity, they stayed put, letting that unseen boundary define their limits.

Eventually, the day came when they decided to test their boundaries, and within seconds, they were out. Just like that, they were free! Watching them, I realized how often we live the same way. How often do we allow fear to fence us in, keeping us from stepping out in faith? Fear can be powerful, but it’s a power we don’t have to accept or live under.

Breaking the Chain of Fear

The Bible reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.” When fear creeps into our hearts, it’s essential to recognize that it doesn’t come from God. If God hasn’t given us that spirit, then where does it come from? Fear often comes from the enemy, who would love nothing more than to see us live in self-imposed limitations. He wants us to feel trapped and powerless, like my pigs in their unpowered fence.

But God’s truth tells us something entirely different. He’s given us a spirit of power, love, and sound judgment. We’re equipped to overcome, not to stay fenced in by fear. When fear controls us, it clouds our judgment and prevents us from seeing the truth of who we are and what we’re capable of in Christ.

A Step of Faith Sets Us Free

Just like my pigs who finally found the courage to test the fence, we too can step beyond the limits fear sets. When we release our fears and trust in God, we find a freedom that’s ours for the taking. Whatever your “fence” may be—whether it’s fear of failure, fear of the unknown, or fear of what others think—know that God is calling you beyond it. Letting go of fear isn’t easy, but it’s possible with God’s help. When we place our faith in Him, He empowers us to break free.

Think on What’s True and Lovely

To overcome fear, we need to anchor our minds in truth. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” When fear tries to creep in, we can turn to these words and refocus our minds on the things of God. Fear loses its power when we replace it with thoughts of His love, goodness, and promises.

So, if you’re feeling fenced in by fear, take a lesson from my pigs: test those limits, lean into God’s promises, and step forward in faith. With God by your side, you’re not only free from fear—you’re empowered to live boldly in the freedom He’s given. Don’t let fear hold you back. Trust in God, and experience the freedom that comes from walking in His love, power, and truth.
